Animation 5

Description

In 1923, about ten years after Bohr's model of the atom was proposed DeBroglie proposed that electrons possess a wave nature. In 1927 Davisson and Germer produced a diffraction pattern from interfering electrons proving that electrons do indeed have a wave nature.
Bohr's theory never explained why the orbits were quantized. With DeBroglie's model the electrons can be viewed as standing waves. Below an electron is moving in a circular standing wave which corresponds to the n=2 level. When bombarded by a photon of precisley the right energy the electron is "excited" to the n=3 state. The animation then starts over.
